When Madison's best friend Aimee finds out about Ivy's plans to run for class president, Aimee decides to run herself. Madison's teacher from her computer class asks her if she would like to help with the class election site. Madison and Egg get the site looking perfect...that is until someone decides to ruin it. When Ivy's and Aimee's pictures are replaced on the site, Madison finds herself in the middle. It doesn't help any, though, that Madison's dad has a new girlfriend and that Madison now has a crush. worth buying
Beautiful photographs, well laid out lists of ingredients, not a book for someone just starting out as cooking instructions are pretty terse.

A Collection of Only the Best!
"Good taste is one of those elusive qualities that most people find hard to define, even though they know it when they see it. In general, however, it denotes quality, simplicity, and ease. When applied to food, taste is also present when good ingredients are cooked in an honest way that highlights the essence of their taste, texture, and appearance." -Chuck Williams

Chuck Williams' philosophy is to celebrate the pleasure of cooking. He opened his first store in Sonoma, CA in 1956 and now more than 200 stores have opened in the United States. He has literally helped to revolutionize cooking in America.

My first introduction to a Williams-Sonoma store was when some friends bought me the cutest Les Garcons Dinnerware as a wedding present. French artist Guy Buffet is renowned for his whimsical impressionistic style and creates the porcelain plates, each with a different waiter. They are made exclusively for Williams-Sonoma and are a favorite collectible.

Later, while walking through Bellevue Square in Bellevue, WA I saw the plates there and then fell in love with cooking stores.

The Best of Taste is a 320 page compilation of the favorite recipes from the first year of Williams-Sonoma TASTE Magazine. Many of the world's greatest chefs have made a contribution to this cookbook. Marimar Torres, Joyce Goldstein, Nancy Silverton, Patricia Wells, Deborah Madison, Jean Georges Vongerichten to name a few.

Throughout this cookbook, you will find 250 beautiful, larger-than-life photographs. Fascinating pictures of a bakery in Paris or a honey farm in Manhattan. There are also photographs of the techniques in the recipes to illustrate the food preparation steps.

Each recipe has the most gorgeous picture and a full page with an easy to read ingredient list and numbered instructions.

The contents include (with recipe selections):

Introduction
Drinks - Guava Colada to Tropical Delights

Starters - Spicy Crab Cakes, Endive with Crab, Bacon wrapped dates, Balkan Meat-Stuffed Potato Pastries, the cutest Caviar Purses, Sizzling Shrimp with Garlic.

Soups & Stews - Gorgeous Avocado-Cucumber Soup, Spanish Garlic Soup, Beef and Onion Stew.

Salads - Marinated Zucchini and Goat's Cheese Salad, Apple, Celeriac and Chestnut Salad, Kidney Bean and Chicken Salad.

Entrees - Matambre, Stuffed Lamb with Eggplant and Feta, Veal Involtini with Grilled Anaheim Chiles, Fish Baked in Salt, braised Short Ribs with Bok Choy.

Sides - Green Garlic and Spinach Soufflé, Butternut Squash with Dates and Pistachios, Hot and Spicy Roasted Pears (from the cover), Stir-Fried Eggplant.

Desserts - Buzzy Bees (cookies), Chocolate Chunk Cherry Biscotti (talk about heavenly), Chocolate Rum Truffles, Nun's Breasts with Pumpkin Cream (a pillow of pumpkin pastry cream atop a crunchy cornmeal oatmeal cookie, showered with powdered sugar), Plum and Grape Cobbler, Cherry -Almond Cake, Orange Custard, Pomegranate Sorbet and a divine Chocolate Soufflé.

I feel a little heady just typing all those delicious dessert names.

A definite collectable you will actually want to cook from! Also perfect for coffee table reflection. Just as fun to read as to cook from. Your heart will beat a little faster while you read (or one could say: "devour with your eyes") this cookbook.

Truly an Exciting Cookbook filled with delicious recipes! If this book doesn't get you into the kitchen, nothing will!

great food book
easy-to-do menus, I've made about 40% of the menus in the book ... non-complicated and creative recipes, delightful!

Ceramic Arts Studio: Identification and Price Guide (A Schiffer Book for Collectors)
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (July, 1994)
Author: Mike Schneider
Average review score:

Good, but wanted more information
Excellent photos; was disappointed that it did not include values for additional pieces in sets he discussed. For example, I have 3 of 4 ballerinas he discussed but he did not give a price for one I have that he didn't. I am looking forward to his next edition.

What Doesn't This Genius Write About?
I have no idea how one person can shove all of this vast knowledge into one brain, but Mike Schneider does it...and does it repeatedly. He masterfully depicts the Ceramic Arts pieces with stunningly clear and crisp photographs (taken by the author). The dialogue in the book goes beyond normal collectible books and surpasses some of the novels I've read recently. Bottom line--this book is an asset to any collector, as are Schneider's other books (9 in all--on 9 differing subjects...WOW! )

Wonderful Color Photos with Price Guide
I had no idea of the variety or quality of figurines that Ceramic Arts Studio Pottery made. This book is packed with lots of color photos and useful information! This is a must have book for dealers and collectors of people and animal figurines made in the USA!

Clues to Love

Author: Nancy Madison
Average review score:

Recommended
When a guest of the King's Grant Hotel dies the first weekend that it's open, of course owner Kate Stanhope is thrown into a bit of a tizzy. After all, murder requires that the hotel be closed pending the investigation, meaning Kate risks loosing the hotel because she can't meet her financial obligations. Worse, it seems that the poison wasn't meant for her guest at all, but was meant for Kate herself. Fortunately, she has a loyal staff, a decent relationship with her stepchildren, and the interest of DCI Connor.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Connor is assigned the case. Up for a promotion, solving this case would insure his goals. Although he suspects Kate in the beginning, evidence soon clears her of any wrongdoing. But Connor still has some conflicts of his own due to the intrusion of his neurotic ex-wife. But when another murder occurs, Kate begins to realize that the threat to her is very real, and even Connor may not be able to protect her.

CLUES TO LOVE has terrific potential for a lovely love story combined with suspense. Unfortunately, the novel suffers from inadequate editing. While it nicely contrasts the beautiful setting in the English countryside, with the ugliness of murder, it suffers in detail. The characters are not adequately rounded, and inconsistent details make for very uneven reading. Again, a good editor and a good polish by the author would have made this novel much stronger. Nevertheless, CLUES TO LOVE is a pleasant, light read and comes Recommended.

Five Stars for Clues to Love
In Clues to Love, the reader is enveloped in the sweet savoury essence of an English country hotel and whisked into the lives of an enticing entourage of eccentric characters. Romance blossoms while a murderer stalks the inhabitants, and author Nancy Madison cleverly sprinkles a series of confessions amidst the clues to love and murder.

He Shall Go Out Free: The Lives of Denmark Vesey (American Profiles (Madison, Wis.).)
Published in Textbook Binding by Madison House Pub (01 January, 2001)
Author: Douglas R. Egerton
Average review score:

Excellent, Interesting and Engrossing
This is an excellent history of slavery in South Carolina with a focus on the unsucessful revolt led by Denmark Vesey. The strength of the book is the history of Vesey and the evolutionary process that leds him to his death.

What is most intriguing was the discussion of Vesey's rejection of the New Testement as a guide for his actions and his use of the Old Testement as a guide. The book deals well with the issue of the effect of the masters use of the Christian faith as a justification for slavery on the slaves and freemens spiritual life.

The only flaw in the book was the authors obvious admiration for Vesey. Not that such admiration is not deserved, but it tended to color some of the more difficult issues in Vesey's revolt. For instance, a major controversey has arisen concerning whether as part of the revolt the whites of Charleston were to be massacred. The author does not deal with the claim other than to dismiss is as illogical. However, this dismissal is insufficent given the hate and feellings for revenge that the slaves must have felt toward their masters.

All in all, this is a very readable history important events in American history. A good read.

Outstanding Work
This was an extraordinary book. Douglas Egerton does a marvelous job of telling the different lives of Denmark Vesey. The book is extremely well researched and tells the historical truth of Vesey's life. The author does a wonderful job of finding the true story of Denmark Vesey and incorporates intriging insights into his life. This is a wonderful book that illustrates what life was like for a dynamic slave who turned free. Egerton tells Vesey's story in a fascinating way and does a great job of recapturing Vesey's life. The author tells of how Vesey was a strong-willed, highly intelligent leader who had an ingenious plot to help slaves and free blacks to truly become free. The author shows how fascinating Vesey was even though his plan failed. This is a marvelous book and I highly recomend reading it! It is an absolute joy to read!

STRONGLY Reccomend Reading!
This book is dynamic and I highly recomend reading it. It is wonderfully written with extaordinary prose. The author does a superb job of bringing the readers into the time period and a wonderful jog of telling Vesey's story. Engaging diction and syntax keep the readers alive. There is not a dull moment in this book. Every page is filled th wonderful insights surrounding the times of the book. This book is a must have for people of all interests.I highly recommend reading it and sharing it with a friend. Douglas Egerton does a fascinating job of telling the history of Vesey's life and atmosphere!

Crime of Magnitude: The Murder of Little Annie
Published in Paperback by Prairie Oak Press (May, 1993)
Author: Mark Lemberger
Average review score:

Crime of Magnitude - Mediocre rendition
Eighty years later, Mark Lemberger is out to vindicate his paternal grandfather, thought by some to have assaulted and killed his 7 year old daughter, Annie Lemberger, who would have been the author's aunt. The book is thoroughly researched and the reproduction of contemporaneous newspaper coverage throughout the text is interesting. Possibly to avoid allegations of familial bias, Mark goes on and on and on. I got bogged down and put it down.

Fun to share the author¿s obsession
Though the crime being investigated here is nearly a century old, this book shows how little has changed. Rumors, speculation and personal prejudice still sway the press, the public and the law when it come to "unthinkable" and high-profile crimes. Annie was the Jon-Benet of the early 1900s, with her unsolved murder disinterred in the press on every anniversary. Especially interesting is the early role the polygraph played in this crime - 20 years after the fact, Lemberger and the other suspects basically became guinea pigs for the untested (and still controversial) lie detector. Though one reader here thought the wealth of detail bordered on overkill, it's easy to understand (and enjoy) the author's obsession.

Great true crime story
A good read and good detective story. Mr. Lemberger not only spun the yarn but solved the crime.Darn good work.

America's Congress: Actions in the Public Sphere, James Madison Through Newt Gingrich
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (October, 2000)
Author: David R. Mayhew
Average review score:

"Cute" Concept but Worthwhile
Although the analogy used to organized the book was "cute," it was useful in that the presentation was interesting, and at times, powerful and persuasive. The material was current and could be applied to events occurring today-foreign policy issues, the slow track for approval of judicial candidates, the continuing debate over the impact of majority minority districts, and the toll a negative media can take on an institution whose legitimacy depends upon the trust of the people.

Fascinatingly Detailed
Mayhew once again delivers an insightful and original treatise on the machinations of the world's preeminent legislative body. A must-read for any serious student of political science.

American Compact: James Madison and the Problem of Founding (American Political Thought)
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Kansas (June, 1999)
Author: Gary Rosen
Average review score:

Consistency in Madison's Constitutional Thinking
Excerpted from The Independent Review (Summer 2001) by Hans Eicholz

Rosen presents one point of view, which puts in practice a fairly pure version of what is generally called the "Straussian" interpretive approach. As a historian, I have some strong reservations about his method. Nonetheless, Rosen has made some significant contributions in this monograph.

Rosen correctly notes that scholars have usually ignored Madison's actions as president. They tend to stop with his service in the first federal Congress, as if only his transition from nationalist Publius to state's rights Republican needed to be explained. Rosen's work seeks to fill an important gap in the literature. A nice example is his treatment of the Bank of the United States.

Because Rosen relies almost entirely on Madison's own accounts, we get little sense of the historical context in which Madison was operating. Rather, we get a very streamlined theoretical account of Hobbes, Locke, and Aristotle, and caricatures of Jefferson and Hamilton. The effect is to produce a truncated picture of Madison's intellectual world.

Rosen has made some useful suggestions for approaching Madison's constitutional thought, but he has not adequately developed them, primarily because of his inattention to history.

Madison Revealed
American Compact merits serious consideration by those of legitimate concern with the evolvement of the American Ethic. Self described as a rehabilitation of Madison as a statesman and politician, Rosen's effort greatly exceeds his goal. Tracing the chronicles of Madison's intellect, enlightenment, and experience the myths of this Virginian are dismantled in a scholarly, and prudent fashion. From the claim of Madison's apostacy to his own nationalistic principles in the 1790s ,his demotion to a lieutenant of Jefferson's, or a 'trimmer' Rosen convincingly destroys those myths, and frees Madison from the framework of being considered only in light of his friend Jefferson, and, or, his protagonist Hamilton. In the spirit of Banning and McCoy a fresh view of the Father of the Constitution is afforded those who read the book, to those who study it, a conduit to the allusive Original Intent is possible. The greatest lessons that emerge are the veracity of Madison's claim of consistancy throughout his career, and a clear view of Madison's working to construct a document of national power, which he realized the average man could not accomplish, and then turning it back over to the citizenry not only for ratification, but for the participation Madison saw as required by the principles of the revolution.

The Fridges of Madison County
Published in Paperback by Isabel Press (10 January, 1997)
Average review score:

Yeah, so what?
Hey, come on people. I hate Bridges, YOU hate Bridges. The thing is prototypical of a self-parody. Read the real deal again. It's worse the second time around! But Fridges is pointless. Mercifully short, yes, but pointless. One can see Aguirre and his publisher taking lunch: "Hmm, there's so much Bridges backlash, that ANY tripe we throw together will generate a few bucks!" And so it has. I want MY bucks back. If I remember, MAD magazine did a Bridges riff. National Lampoon should have, mebbe they did. Fridges just don't cut it. Perhaps what is needed is something akin to those Best Bad Hemmingway contests. A Best Bad Waller contest. Or would that be oxymoronic? Fridges is just plain moronic. Again, Amazon, where's that zero-stars option?

A seminal work
Aguirre has crafted a seminal work. An offbeat erotic satire which deftly explores an unpremeditated collision between two emotionally deprived but utterly incompatible souls. The denouement, in which the debris from their extraordinary encounter is reassembled into a frosty collage, leaves the reader at once enlightened and confused. The plot, though, is simple: Francesca thought Spencer was Robert The night that her G.E. got clobbered What she did to her beaver Made "Cleave" a believer (Thank God he wasn't Wayne Bobbit)

A fridge full of laughter
The book is so good I'm surprised it wasn't written by an Italian. Mamma mia, che ridere! The author must have some Latin blood in him, like Francesca, the main character in the story. If my wife does the same things Francesca did with the photographer, I hope she too will meet Perry the Cleave (so he might even fix my fridge for free!). You out there, photographers and not, stay away from my wife... but not from this book! It is a must-read for anyone having a wife or a fridge (also for those being a wife or a fridge). I cannot recommend it more strongly from this far away. If you want a good laugh, while pondering at the profoundness of life, look no further. But if you saw "The Bridges" then not reading this book will make you miss out on a big slice of reality!
